Chess
The classic strategy game with big, clear pieces. Take on the computer at your own level, or play a friend on the same screen.
How to play Chess
- Goal: checkmate the other king. That means it is under attack and has no safe square to move to.
- Move a piece: tap it to see where it can go (shown with dots), then tap a dot. You can also drag pieces.
- How pieces move: the rook goes straight, the bishop goes diagonally, the queen does both, the knight jumps in an L shape, the king steps one square, and pawns step forward and capture diagonally.
- Special moves all work: castling (move your king two squares toward a rook), en passant, and promoting a pawn that reaches the far side.
- Draws happen by stalemate, the same position three times, 50 moves without a capture or pawn move, or when neither side can checkmate.
- Pick your opponent on the right: Easy, Medium or Hard computer, or 2 players on one device.
Tips
- Control the center squares early with your pawns and knights.
- Get your knights and bishops out before moving your queen a lot.
- Castle early to keep your king safe.
- Before every move, check what your opponent is attacking.
- Start on Easy, then move up a level once you win a few games.
